Practical Tools

The term “practical tools” refers to manuals, handbooks, guides, source books, and other “how to” resources intended to help conservation practitioners to enhance their job performance when dealing with people.

It is necessary to be careful, however, when using these practical tools. Because of the complexity of human behavior, easy and quick ways to understand and work with people in the process of conservation may overlook critical pieces of information. Accordingly, these practical tools are not intended to substitute for social science expertise, but instead to favor interdisciplinary communication and collaboration among social scientists, natural scientists, and practitioners.

Examples of practical tools include:

  • Payments for Environmental Services: Some Nuts and Bolts
  • A Manual for Planning and Implementing the Living Standards Measurement Study Survey (LSMS)
  • Guidelines for the Conduct of Cultural, Environmental and Social Assessments on Indigenous and Local Communities
  • Guide to Participatory Environmental Rapid Assessment
  • Legal Toolbox for Participatory Fisheries. User Manual and Templates
