The Catalog of Conservation Social Science Tools is a product of the SSWG Conservation Committee. Catalog development was led by Rodolfo Tello (WWF-US Intern and University of Maryland, College Park), in consultation with Diane Russell (USAID and SSWG Conservation Committee Chair) and Mike Mascia (WWF-US and SSWG President). Financial support was provided by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, with in-kind support provided by WWF-US Conservation Science Program and the SCB Executive Office.
The Catalog of Conservation Social Science Tools builds on the previous work of different groups, including:
- Social Science Tools for Conservation Practitioners: Current Opportunities and Future Directions (2005). SSWG Workshop. SCB annual meeting; Brasilia, Brazil.
- Putting conservation in Context: Social Science Tools for Conservation Practitioners (2003). CD-ROM. Community Conservation Coalition. Washington, DC.
- People and Priority Setting: Social Science Tools and Information for Conservation Portfolios (2006). CD-ROM. Conservation Strategies Conference / The Nature Conservancy. Austin, TX.
- Assessment of guidance documents available (2005). Sheila O’Connor, Conservation Measures and Audit, WWF International. Institutional document in process.
Valuable suggestions on preliminary drafts were provided by Leah Bunce, Jean Brennan, Connie Campbell, Karen Carney, Janet Chernela, Dekila Chungyalpa, Darron Collins, Jonathan Cook, Shelton Davis, Eric Dinerstein, Judith Freidenberg, Colby Lockus, Robin Naidoo, Sue Palminteri, Dawn Pointer, Nick Salafsky, Jenny Springer, Taylor Ricketts, and Alan Thornhill.
