In 2004, the North America Section (NAS) of SCB, recognizing the conflict between economic growth and biodiversity conservation, adopted a position on economic growth. The NAS committee that had shepherded adoption of the position subsequently realized the global nature of the issue of economic growth. Seeking broader support for studying and applying the tenets of ecological economics, the committee evolved into the WGEESS with board positions and members from all SCB sections. SCB officially sanctioned the working group in May 2006. By the end of the 2006 SCB Annual Meeting, the WGEESS had over 100 members from dozens of countries.
