An Announcement from Alice Hurlbatt, Acting Chair, YWCB Awards Committee:

As Acting Chair of the Awards Committee of the YWCB, I am extremely pleased to announce that we have selected Ms Kristal Maze, of the South African National Biodiversity Institute, as the winner of our 2008 Award - congratulations from all of us at the YWCB group.

We had an extremely high caliber of nominations this year, and through a peer reviewed, quantitative scoring system, the Awards Committee have selected Ms Maze as the winner of this Award in 2008 - recognizing her for her exemplary national planning, management and policy development for fine-scaled biodiversity conservation in the Southern African biodiversity hotspots.

We believe that her outstanding achievements and commitment to conservation biology in Africa have set her apart from the other nominees, by virtue of her exceptional motivation, dedication and enthusiasm for conservation, and by the leadership, professionalism and high standards with which she carries out this role. She is a credit to her organisation, and an inspiration to young women (and men) working in this sector.

We are honoured to recognise her by this Award, and sincerely hope that her work in this area is able to continue for a long time and we wish her the best of luck with all her future endeavours.

Yours Sincerely,

Alice Hurlbatt,
Acting Chair, YWCB Awards Committee
