An Announcement from Phoebe Barnard, Chair of the SCB Africa Section Young Women Conservation Award Panel:

The SCB Africa Section's Young Women Conservation Biologists (YWCB) Awards Panel is happy to announce its unanimous selection of Shivani Bhalla as the winner of this year's YWCB Award - the third year that this has been awarded. Shivani is a young Kenyan conservation biologist working with Oxford University and several Kenyan conservation organizations on elephant and lion conservation in human-occupied landscapes, and has demonstrated uncommon commitment to enhancing the coexistence between humans and predators in northern Kenya, as well as uplifting the educational opportunities of local villagers.

This year's panel was faced with an awkward task of choosing between extremely deserving candidates -- all of which in other circumstances would have been excellent awardees themselves. However, Shivani's exceptionally positive attitude, academic excellence, breadth and depth of activities in the conservation and community awareness arenas were really exemplary. The award will be presented at the 2009 SCB meeting in Beijing, 11-16 July, at which Shivani will join illustrious SCB awardees for the SCB LaRoe and Distinguished Service Awards including Joel Berger, George Schaller and Kamal Bawa. We in Africa are really fortunate to have conservation biologists with such passion and energy in our midst.

The 2007 winner of the YWCB Award was Margaret Aanyu, freshwater biologist from Uganda, and the 2008 winner was Kristal Maze, chief director of biodiversity planning and mainstreaming from South Africa.
