A CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS: EDITORIAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM AUSTRAL AND NEOTROPICAL AMERICA SECTION SE BUSCAN VOLUNTARIOS: PROGRAMA DE ASISTENCIA EDITORIAL DE LA SECCION PARA AMERICA NEOTROPICAL Y AUSTRAL (Castellano, más abajo) The Austral and Neotropical America Section (ANA) would like to encourage Latin American conservation biologists to publish in Conservation Biology, the leading journal in the field. A common problem of manuscripts submitted to Conservation Biology by Latin Americans is their written English. While no scientifically sound article is rejected on the basis of its language, appropriate writing can assist in the review and publication process. In this regard, ANA is organizing a free Editorial Assistance Program to assist Spanish, Portuguese and French-speaking authors from Latin American who are not native speakers of English.
ANA will create a database with SCB members willing to assist authors with their manuscripts, and manuscripts will be assigned according to the area of expertise. This will not be a translation service.
We invite you to join this service. You must have good English and Spanish, Portuguese or French writing skills. If interested in helping out as a volunteer, or in submitting a manuscript, please contact ANA Chief Financial Officer, Arturo Sánchez-Azofeifa at arturo.sanchez@ualberta.ca. (Castellano) La Sección para América Neotropical y Austral (ANA) desea exhortar a los biólogos de conservación latinoamericanos a que publiquen sus investigaciones en Conservation Biology, la principal revista de la disciplina en el mundo. Un problema frecuente de los autores latinoamericanos potenciales es su dominio limitado del inglés. A pesar de que ningún artículo cuyo contenido científico sea sólido es rechazado sólo por limitaciones de idioma, una correcta redacción facilita el proceso de revisión y edición de manuscritos. En este sentido, ANA está organizando un programa gratuito de asistencia editorial, para ayudar a autores latinoamericanos cuya lengua materna sea castellano, portugués o francés. ANA creará una base de datos con miembros de SCB dispuestos a colaborar con los autores en la mejora de sus manuscritos, los cuales serán asignados según sus especialidades respectivas. No se trata de un servicio de traducción. Los voluntarios sólo ayudarán a mejorar la claridad del texto y su gramática, así como refinar el lenguaje para hacerlo más apropiado para su publicación. Lo invitamos a sumarse a este servicio. Debe dominar el inglés escrito y al menos uno entre castellano, portugués y francés. Professional development / Formación profesional: JOINT MASTERS PROGRAM AT YALE'S ENVIRONMENT MANAGEMENT CENTER (English only / sólo inglés) The Yale School of Management (SOM) and the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies (FES) offer a Joint Masters Program through which students earn both an MBA and an environmental masters degree in three years. The rigorous curriculum at Yale's Environment Management Center provides students the opportunity to work with and learn from world renowned faculty at these two premier graduate schools, as well as leading professionals in business and environmental management. The intersection of business and the environment at the Environment Management Center offers many exciting and dynamic opportunities for creativity in moving towards a sustainable economy. Fellowship opportunity / disponibilidad de beca: THE CHRISTENSEN FUND GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM IN PLANT CONSERVATION (1 December deadline) (English only / sólo inglés) The International Center for Tropical Ecology (ICTE) at the University of Missouri-St. Louis is offering a fully funded fellowship to students from tropical America, Africa, Madagascar, Asia, Malesia and the Pacific Islands with strong leadership and research potential in applied plant conservation. This fellowship is available to individuals with applied plant conservation experience and strong academic credentials for studies leading to a M.S. or Ph.D. degree. This special Graduate program in Plant Conservation, developed in collaboration with The Christensen Fund and the Missouri Botanical Garden, is designed to educate plant conservation scientists from the world's tropical regions. The fellowship will provide recruitment and repatriation airfares, stipend, tuition fee waiver and the opportunity to apply for competitive research funds. Oportunidad de cooperación científica / Scientific cooperation apportunity: NECESITAMOS NUEVAS ESTACIONES MoSI Y ANILLADORES DE AVES PARA EL INVIERNO DE 2005-06 / NEW MoSI STATIONS AND BIRD BANDERS NEEDED FOR WINTER 2005-06 (Castellano e inglés / Spanish and English) (English below) MoSI (Monitoreo de Sobrevivencia Invernal) es un esfuerzo cooperativo entre más de 30 organizaciones, agencias y anilladores de aves individuales establecido en el año 2002 para determinar la calidad de los habitats de aves terrestres neotropicales migratorias en México, Centroamerica y el Caribe. Los contribuidores al programa MoSI manejan estaciones de anillamiento durante 3-5 pulsos mensuales (cada pulso que consiste en 2-3 días de la niebla-red) entre noviembre y marzo. Funding / fondos disponibles: AMERICAN BIRD CONSERVANCY'S WILLIAM BELTON FUND (30 September deadline) (English only / sólo inglés) American Bird Conservancy's William Belton Fund, the Americas' longest running bird conservation grants program, will again provide support for projects to conserve Critically Endangered and Endangered bird species across Latin America and the Caribbean in 2006. Seeking 2 volunteer field assistants from 12th November 2005 - 6th April 2006 for research on reproductive success and mating skew of manakins in Tiputini Biological Station, Amazonia Ecuador (for information about TBS see http://tiputini.usfq.edu.ec). Research addresses hypotheses about variables that are affecting female mate choice and male mating success of Pipra pipra (White crowned manakin). Moreover, research will aim to compare difference in mating success of males using direct (microsatellite markers) and indirect (observational data) methods of paternal assignment. Fieldwork involves use of mist nets to! mark and bleed individuals, behavioral observations, radio tracking, nest searching and territory mapping. Applicants should have a strong interest in birds, field biology, and be prepared to work long days. You should be able to follow prescribed protocols, be meticulous in collecting and recording data, be in good physical condition, work both independently and closely with others, and possess good communication skills. Experience with nest searching and behavioral observations is preferred; a basic knowledge of Spanish is necessary. If you have radio tracking experience, great!
