Gulf Island Song Sparrow Field Research Assistants

Songbird field research assistants are needed for a study on how the fear of predators affects the survival of newly fledged song sparrow young located on the beautiful Southern Gulf Islands, BC. You will assist in finding and monitoring of song sparrow nests throughout the nesting period (i.e. egg laying to when nestling fledge/leave the nest). You also may aid in the tracking of juvenile song sparrows using radio telemetry and performing behavioural observations of juvenile song sparrows. Duties that individuals will perform are 1) searching for song sparrow nests, 2) identifying colour banded song sparrows with binoculars, 3) radio track fledglings, 4) deploying protective equipment to prevent predators gaining access to song sparrow nests, 5) maintenance of wildlife traps. Along with these duties, individuals also will be introduced to the handling and banding of birds, and capturing birds using mist nets.
This position will require that individuals stay camped out in the Gulf Islands National Park for the duration of employment. All camping fees for accommodation at the Southern Gulf Islands National Park will be provided. Individuals will travel amongst the islands in a small boat, usually on a daily basis. Although the work will often be physically demanding and involve long hours, your ’office’ will be one of the most beautiful places on the planet (the Gulf Islands) and you will learn a plethora of skills that will be of use to you if you choose to pursue graduate school or further field research. The job will go from 1-Apr to mid-early August; start and end dates are flexible. These are paid positions at $1,500/month (CDN). 1) Driver's licence REQUIRED (Class 5 or higher, Novice or better, Learner NOT acceptable)
2) Pleasure Craft Operator's Card (PCOC) REQUIRED, if lacking PCOC must secure PCOC before job begins (i.e. 01-Apr-2014)
Other Qualifications (you can still apply if you do not meet any of them):
1) Previous field research experience an asset, but not required
2) Ability to identify small, colour banded songbirds an asset
3) Previous boating experience an asset
4) Previous outdoor experience (i.e. camping, hiking) an asset
5) Work at times will be physically demanding, requiring at least average strength and endurance
6) Work at times will be uncomfortable (e.g. in bad weather) and involve long hours (10-12 hours)
