GIS Technician/Cartographer

A Geographic Information System (GIS) Technician/Cartographer (Research Associate I Special) position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). This position is located at Camp Roberts, California.

CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. Camp Roberts is located in central California, approximately 25 miles east of the Pacific Ocean in the southern portion of the Salinas River Valley, midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The installation is bisected in an east-west direction by the Monterey and San Luis Obispo county line; and U.S. Highway 101, a north-south route, parallels the Salinas River and divides Camp Roberts into two sections, Main and East Garrisons. Camp Roberts encompasses 42,784 acres, of which approximately 2,514 acres are developed, and 8,130 acres are impact areas. The remaining acreage is used for maneuver training.

The GIS Technician will be a member of the California Army National Guard Sustainable Range Program and provide technical support for the geospatial information used in range and training area operations. Other duties include performing cartographic design and production, and working with Integrated Training Area Management staff and other installation directorates to develop and maintain Spatial Data Standards for Facilities Infrastructure and Environment (SDSFIE) compliant geodatabases and Federal Geospatial Data Committee compliant metadata. The employee may also be responsible for collecting field data (GPS), assisting with data analyses, and providing GIS products and information for reports, presentations, and other products.

The successful candidate must demonstrate U.S. employment eligibility; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position. A BS/BA in geography or closely related discipline with GIS coursework and one continuous year of post graduate professional experience with GIS as a principal responsibility are required. Experience with ArcGIS 10.x or higher and experience with GIS database development are necessary. The successful candidate must have the ability to work as part of a team in a structured organization and to work under harsh weather conditions and in uneven terrain. The successful candidate must have or be able to obtain a valid driver’s license. CSU conducts a background check on all final candidates.

The successful candidate should have demonstrated knowledge of geodatabase structure, functions, management, and development. Experience with enterprise GIS, solid local and network file management skills, demonstrated experience working with GIS applications in natural resources management, cartography, and GPS hardware/software are beneficial. Knowledge of and experience with Army/DoD GIS programs and spatial data standards (SDSFIE) and the ability to work and meet established program standards and requirements is preferred. The successful candidate should be self-starter and have the ability to take initiative, work independently, and produce results.

Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Range: $42,000-$54,000. Continuation of the position is dependent on the receipt of funding from the sponsor for GIS Technician efforts at Camp Roberts, California.
