Field Assistant for Non-invasive Carnivore Research in Arizona

I am currently seeking volunteers to assist me in a non-invasive study of the carnivore communities of southern Arizona, as part of my dissertation research on carnivore resource partitioning at the University of Louisiana Lafayette.

POSITION: Volunteer field assistants

DURATION: Currently, I am looking for volunteers for anytime in from September 2014 to July 2015. There is no minimum time commitment for volunteers.

STUDY SITE: The study is being conducted in three protected areas in southern Arizona: Saguaro National Park, Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, and the Chiricahua Wilderness Area.

QUALIFICATIONS: Assistants must be in good physical condition and willing to work in the field for up to 10 hours a day, often in hot and very dry weather.

LIVING CONDITIONS/EXPENSES: For out of state volunteers, we have limited housing available in Phoenix. We will transport volunteers from Phoenix to each field site and back. Lodging at the field sites will consist of camping. Camping site fees will be covered, however volunteers will be responsible for providing their own camping equipment and food.

MAIN DUTIES: Assistants will be conducting non-invasive surveys of carnivores using trail cameras, track plates, and sign/scat surveys, as well as performing vegetation surveys. Assistants will gain valuable experience in the following methods:
• Fieldwork in an arid environment
• Remote wildlife cameras
• Track plates
• Sign and scat surveys
• Vegetation surveys
• Identification of mammal tracks and scat
