Executive Director and Baykeeper

Job Type: full-time permanent position

Location: Long Island, NY

Posting Date: 19 May 14

Closing Date: N/A

The Board of Directors of Peconic Baykeeper is conducting a nation-wide search to fill the positions of Executive Director and Baykeeper.

Peconic Baykeeper is a proud member of the international Waterkeeper Alliance and has been an advocate for swimmable, fishable and drinkable waters since 1998. It is the only independent, not-for-profit exclusively dedicated to the protection and restoration of the Peconic and South Shore estuaries of Long Island.

In order to both continue and expand upon past efforts, the Board of Directors is taking steps to restructure the organization consistent with other successful models within the Waterkeeper Alliance movement. The creation of separate Executive Director and Baykeeper positions will provide for both the strategic implementation of long range plans along with an increased presence on local waters, in classrooms, town halls, civic meetings and at other community events consistent with our grassroots mission.

The continued growth and evolution of Peconic Baykeeper will usher in a new era of programmatic expansion and enhanced environmental advocacy as we continue to battle an increasing array of water quality issues. Increased nitrogen levels in our ground and surface waters, a growing litany of impaired waterbodies, the second highest number of superfund sites in the State, routinely closed bathing beaches and the collapse of once thriving shellfish populations are all testament to the need for change.

See you on the water!
Peconic Baykeeper will continue to use advocacy, science, education and the law to fight for clean water. We look forward to deepening our focus on what matters: the protection of our waters.
