Subject: Book: Venomous Snakes of Panama and Costa Rica
Venomous snake encounters in Panama and Costa Rica are a potential for local people, tourists, students and researchers. Unfortunately many snakes are senselessly killed because it is widely believe that all species are harmful to humans. At the same time, snakebite occurs in the remote areas of these countries where people live and work hand-in-hand with the snakes. Education is an important key in conservation of snakes and the reduction of snakebite for humans.
Team Snake Panama is bridging the gap between the snakes and humans. The Venomous Snakes (and their Mimics) of Panama and Costa Rica is our first book and is sure to be an important aid in saving both snake and human lives.
The book contains nearly 50 species accounts, including all of the venomous snakes in Panama and Costa Rica and the most commonly confused mimics. Each account provides straightforward identification information, one to several colored photographs, and a range map. An introduction provides information on political boundaries and habitat types, prevention and treatment of snakebite, and suggestions on how to safely enjoy nature in Latin America. A list of hospitals for each province is included at the end of the book. All text is in English and Spanish and each species is colored coded for quick and easy identification in the field.
We believe this book will be incredibly helpful for the local people, any students or researchers studying in Panama or Costa Rica (especially those not working with snakes), and to the general tourist venturing into the forest. The great photos and identification information also will be useful to herpetology enthusiasts and budding young biologists.
Right now we would like to make a big push towards finishing the book and we are asking for your help! We need some funds to allow us finish formatting and get to press.
