Beyond the Obituaries: Success Stories in Marine Conservation

The Second International Marine Conservation Congress is pleased to welcome the return of the one day program entitled "Beyond the Obituaries: Success Stories in Ocean Conservation" which will take place on the 14th of May.   The event will highlight conservation efforts that are making a difference around the world, allow conservation professionals to learn from the success of others, and demonstrate to the public and policy makers that the situation is not hopeless.   The program will consist of invited speakers, an open-mike session, and a panel discussion.  

Ocean Tapas: Small Bites of Big Ocean Issues- IMCC & COMPASS Reception
Saturday, May 14, 6:30pm, Carson Hall, Victoria Conference Centre
At this opening event you’ll get a taste of what’s to come at IMCC. Leading scientists and ocean heroes will kick off the conference with insightful overviews of the new science and big ideas we’ll be exploring over the next few days.

A knowledgeable group of leading international journalists will join the discussion to help pinpoint issues and explore solutions. Nancy Baron, Outreach Director for COMPASS and author of the new book “Escape from the Ivory Tower: A Guide to Making Your Science Matter” will keep the fast-paced discussion moving with audience participation. Bring your tough questions and an open mind, and be ready for a lively and inspiring conversation that will continue at the reception to follow.

Celebrating the "Crown Jewels of the Ocean": Reception of UNESCO's World Heritage Marine Programme and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission
Sunday, May 15, 7:30-10:30 pm
This reception celebrates the Crown Jewels of the Ocean - 43 spectacular marine sites worldwide that have been recognized on the UNESCO World Heritage List for their Outstanding Universal Value. The event will present UNESCO's success story in Ocean Conservation and launch its new roadmap to make it a model for others.

The event is jointly hosted by the UNESCO World Heritage Marine Programme and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission. Light food and drinks will be available free of charge to conference registrants.

Monday, May 16, 8:30pm
Scientists are frequently urged to “build relationships” with journalists, but often lack the opportunities to do so. Here’s your chance to meet and mingle with journalists whose outlets, interests, and locations range all over the map. We’ll help you make some new connections so you can see for yourself that “the media” are a varied and lively bunch. Come prepared to participate in a light icebreaker activity and to have fun. Cash bar.

Closing Party at the Strathcona Hotel
Wednesday, May 18, 7:30 pm until ???
The Strathcona Hotel, located in downtown Victoria, BC, a block from the Conference Centre will host our closing party. We have exclusive use of two of the seven separate venues offered within the building, but feel free to check out the other landmark venues (http://www.strathconahotel.com/index.html). Come reconnect and decompress with conference friends new and old, enjoy a casual dinner, all night appy’s and stay for the live band and dancing in the downstairs club, or sit back and enjoy a beverage and game of billiards in the upstairs pub.

Visualizing Your Marine Data in Google Earth (4 Days) Foulkes, J., Keen, T., Vick, C., Race, W.

Google, the Sylvia Earle Foundation, Oceana, and other organizations have partnered to make information about marine science and conservation available to the world in the Ocean in Google Earth. The Ocean layers in Google Earth contain important geolocated data and exciting multimedia content, critical to our global monitoring efforts. This workshop will teach you how to create data in Google Earth and contribute your data to the Ocean layers in Google Earth for the world to see. The workshop is designed for executive directors, communications managers, community members, data managers, scientists, researchers, GIS specialists, and other interested stakeholders who want to use Google data and visualization tools.
