What is a SCB Chapter?Chapters are affiliates of SCB that serve an area such as a university, town, region, state, ecoregion, or several small countries. The purpose of Chapters is to provide a way for SCB members (and others) in local areas to organize and network around the mission of the Society. Think of Chapters as a way of "acting locally" while the parent society is a way of "thinking globally." When they first began in the early 1990s, Chapters primarily focused on students (grads and undergrads) and functioned as clubs and recruiting grounds for conservation biology. More recently, many Chapters have broadened their scope to include professional members and to undertake a wide range of activities that serve their members’ specific needs and interests. Now roughly 1/3 of Chapters are comprised mostly of students, 1/3 are mostly professionals, and 1/3 have a healthy mix of students and professionals. As of 2010, they collectively represented about 500 SCB members.
