Freshwater Mollusk Conservation Society joins SCB in Chattanooga to celebrate Freshwater Mollusk Diversity

The Freshwater Mollusk Conservation Society (FMCS), in collaboration with the Society for Conservation Biology (SCB), is sponsoring a field trip, a symposium, and a workshop as part of the SCB 22nd Annual Meeting to be held at the Chattanooga Convention Center, Chattanooga, Tennessee, July 13-18, 2008. This collaboration between SCB and FMCS is an opportunity for members of both societies to share the latest in research, monitoring approaches, and natural resource management information to support the conservation of freshwater species, habitats and ecosystems.

Aquatic Field Trip: “A Day in a Freshwater Biodiversity Rainforest: the Duck River of Central Tennessee”
Fieldtrip organizers: FMCS, co-sponsored by the FMCS and the SCB Freshwater Working Group) When: July 13, 2008

The southeastern United States is known as a global hotspot for freshwater biodiversity. This field trip to the Duck River will give participants an intimate view of one of the most biologically diverse streams in North America. The Duck River supports over 140 species of fish and 75 species of freshwater mollusks, along with equally diverse communities of other aquatic groups. Participants will be able to use snorkeling and seining to observe many of the species present at the site. Local experts in the identification and natural history of these species will coordinate the sampling and provide an overview of the current threats and opportunities for conserving this extraordinary freshwater ecosystem.

SCB Symposium: “Beneath the Surface: the Freshwater Mollusks of the Southeastern United States.”
Session organizers: Ryan Evans When: July 14, 2008

As part of the SCB program, the FMCS has organized a half-day Symposium to introduce the diversity of species, life history strategies, habitat requirements, and responses to stream modifications that make conserving freshwater mollusks both an imperative an a daunting challenge. Expert speakers will include the latest research findings and issues regarding freshwater mollusk biology and conservation in presentations designed for conservationists from around the world. This Symposium will be held Monday, July 14, 2008, from 1:30 to 5:30 PM.

The 2008 FMCS Workshop, “The Road to Recovery; Science to Secure Freshwater Mollusk Biodiversity”
Session organizers: FMCS When: July 15, 2008

The 2008 FMCS Workshop will be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at the Chattanooga Convention Center. This full-day Workshop will examine the state of the science regarding the recovery of freshwater mollusks and the ecosystems on which they depend. Experts will present papers on aspects of recovery for freshwater mollusks, other freshwater taxa, and aquatic communities. Recovery will be addressed in the context of:

- Regulatory and scientific criteria
- Conservation genetics
- Population metrics and monitoring
- The role of propagation
- Life history, fish hosts and habitat requirements
- Physical and chemical barriers
- Ecosystem structure and function
- Global status of freshwater mollusks
- International recovery activities

This Workshop has been designed to provide recovery tools for researchers, resource managers, and practitioners who have responsibility for freshwater ecosystems. Panel sessions have been included in the agenda to encourage discussion of recent research, and to identify research gaps and management needs.
