Colleagues:

Welcome to the world of SCB 2003! We are looking forward to meeting you in Duluth next June and July. Duluth is a great place to visit during the summer. We hope that you'll come for the meeting and stay for the fun! Northern Minnesota is home to national forests, one of the largest bodies of water in the world (and all of the associated activities that come with it), and an incredibly comfortable summer climate.

This meeting promises to be a great opportunity for networking and professional development. We hope you'll submit an abstract to share your research at the meeting this year. We are making every effort to make this the most student-friendly SCB Annual Meeting ever by arranging several student-focused opportunities: Beer with the Board, informal student recreation activities, and special "student spaces" to get information (you're on one of them now).

We created this page so students will have one place to go to navigate the ins-and-outs of this conference. If there's something missing from this page that you think ought to be here, send us an e-mail and we'll see what we can do (2003@conservationbiology.org).

See you in Duluth! Erika, Fiona, Chris, and Dave*

Beer with the Board
Come mingle with the SCB Board of Directors! All student conferees are invited to tip a glass with members of the SCB Board of Directors at this exclusive, student-only event. Beer with the Board will be held 30 minutes prior to the opening reception. A complimentary drink ticket will be included in your registration packet. Cheers!

Topic Lunch
A veritable "Who's Who" in Conservation Biology! This event will be a great opportunity to meet leading researchers and scholars in your area of interest. The topic luncheon is scheduled for Monday in the DECC arena. A box lunch will cost you approximately $8.

for a list of topics.

Information Table and Message Board
This year the annual meeting's message board will have a special section just for students -- watch that area for special events for students. The message board will be a good way to network with other students in your area of interest, begin threaded discussions, and participate in informal student events (see below). The information table will also be staffed with students from the Duluth area -- ask them where to get a good cup of coffee, rent a kayak, or find a good used book store.

Informal Events
University of Minnesota students (from both Duluth and the Twin Cities campuses) are planning to host several informal activities throughout the conference: morning jogging, bird watching, hiking trips on area trails, indoor rock climbing, ultimate Frisbee, and possibly a little sand volleyball. Check out the student message board when you arrive in Duluth (and keep your eyes on the board throughout the conference) to find out when and where these events will take place.

Cheap Digs
The least expensive accommodations at the conference will be in the dorms at the University of Minnesota Duluth (15 minute shuttle ride from the DECC) or the University of Wisconsin-Superior (20 minute shuttle ride from the DECC). Rooms are $48 per night and include two single beds. While the conference planning committee can't help you find a roommate, you might find one using the chat room feature on the SCB site (click here).

Student Awards
Think you have a great paper or poster? Submit your abstract to be considered for a student award. The deadline for submissions for student awards is 17 January 2003. More information is available on the Call for Abstracts page.

Funding for Students
As it has in past years, SCB will be providing travel awards for students presenting talks or posters at SCB 2003. The awards will be competitive, so check back here for more information on how to apply for these awards this spring.

Volunteering
Want to attend the meeting for free and get a cool t-shirt to boot? We are currently compiling a database of students who are interested in volunteering at the conference. The first 100 volunteers who commit to volunteering 12 hours at the conference will have their registration fees waived in exchange for their time. Additional volunteers will receive reduced registration fees for their time. If you are interested, please fill out the form below, and we'll send you a list of volunteer options in the spring. We will contact people on a first-come, first-serve basis, so fill out this form today!
