(b) promote a supportive environment for undergraduate and graduate students in SCB,
(c) encourage student participation in meetings,
(d) create opportunities for interaction among students and professionals, and
(e) administer the student awards program.
Introduction: Education Committee
Membership on this committee is open to all SCB members who wish to work on projects related to the promotion of conservation education by the Society. Projects of interest involve education at all levels (K-12, undergraduate, graduate, continuing). This committee conducts most of its business by email, but also has strategic meetings at the annual SCB conference. However, this is not an internet discussion group about education. Rather, it is an active workgroup that depends on all its members being involved in working on one or more specific committee projects. If you are interested in participating in the work of this committee, send an e-mail message expressing your interest to the committee chair.

The Education Committee shall facilitate and carry out initiatives designed to promote the education--at all levels, including preparatory and continuing--of the public, of biologists, and of managers in the principles and practices of conservation biology.
Introduction: Student Affairs Committee
The Student Affairs Committee was formed in 2003 to recognize and nurture student participation in and contributions to the Society for Conservation Biology. Our ongoing and prospective activities are:
- Identifying the policies SCB can implement to improve student interest in the Society (both in terms of increasing student membership overall, and increasing active participation)
- Mentoring student abstracts submitted to the global meetings for students for whom English is a second language
- Organizing student oral and poster presentation awards at the global meetings
- Implementing Annual Meeting activities for students including Symposia/workshops and Career Advancement activities
- Creating a “Spotlight on Student Research” that will profile selected student research in SCB’s media
- Establishing a Mentoring Program: Professionals to students; Students to students (particularly among the Sections) and coordinate this activity with the Executive Office
- Developing online resources for students of conservation biology such as grant and scholarship databases and information on conferences, courses, and events of interest for students and early career researchers in conservation biology. Visit scb-students.wikispaces.com
Please contact Piero Visconti if you would like to become involved. Here is your chance to shape how SCB and student members benefit one another.

The Student Affairs Committee shall promote a supportive environment for undergraduate and graduate students in SCB.
The Student Affairs committee shall:
- facilitate coordination of student affairs among Sections,
- encourage student participation in meetings,
- create opportunities for interaction among students and professionals, and
- administer the Student Awards Program and Best Student Paper.
Student Awards
Student awards are given out during the Society for Conservation Biology Annual Meetings. Specific information and deadlines can be found on the upcoming Annual Meeting web page.
In general, any student presenting a paper at the meeting can be considered for an award. During the call for papers, interested students are asked to submit 2 copies of their abstract. A group of papers are selected by a panel prior to the meeting and these students present in special groups during the meeting. After the papers are presented student award winners are chosen and awards are given out at a ceremony held during the Annual Meeting.
