External Capacity Building*

This category refers to interventions aimed to build the infrastructure to do better conservation. Every organization must develop its own capacity to design, implement, manage, and learn from its work. These basic functions should not be considered part of this classification. However, if a group does this type of work to help partner organizations, then it should be part of this category. There are three subcategories:

1. Institutional and Civil Society Development

This subcategory is oriented to build conservation institutions, mainly by creating or providing non-financial support and capacity building for nonprofits, government agencies, communities, and for-profits. Examples include creating new local land trusts, and providing circuit riders to help develop organizational capacity.

2. Alliance and Partnership Development

This subcategory is oriented to promoting cross-organizational informational sharing, learning, and collaboration, mainly by forming and facilitating partnerships, alliances, and networks of organizations. Examples include country networks, and the Conservation Measures Partnership (CMP).

3. Conservation Finance

This subcategory refers to interventions oriented to raise and provide the financial resources for conservation work. Examples of this type of intervention are private foundations, and debt-for-nature swaps.
