2009 Student Award Finalists
The finalists for the 2009 Student Awards have been selected and are being notified as this newsletter goes to press. The finalists presentations will be evaluated and awards announced at SCB's annual meeting in Beijing. As in previous years, the process of selecting finalists was extremely difficult due to the high quality of all of the submissions. We would like to thank the conservation professionals from all of SCB's Regional Sections who served as reviewers. These individuals provided thorough reviews of 92 applications in a short period of time, in many cases reading more than 50 extended abstracts in less than two weeks.
Thanks to our 2009 Student Mentors
We also thank everyone who served as a mentor on abstracts submitted to the 2009 annual meeting. The mentoring scheme was initiated in 2007 to offer guidance to students who are submitting abstracts to the meeting and whose first language is not English. Mentors provide guidance on grammar and clarity of writing. Mentors also ensure that abstracts meet the technical criteria for submission. Mentors do not provide scientific guidance, nor do they write the abstract. This year mentors supported 15 students from countries including China, Cameroon, Egypt, Benin, and Nepal. The time, care, and attention provided by our mentors will help encourage participation in SCB from student members across the globe.
Advice on Delivering Presentations at Meetings
For those of you presenting at either SCB's annual meeting or one of SCB's regional meetings, the Student Affairs Committee provides a number of useful resources at www.conbio.org/studentaffairs/ to assist you in preparing an outstanding presentation.
If you have questions about the work of the Student Affairs Committee, or would like to become involved, please contact Dave Patrick, Chair (dpatrick@paulsmiths.edu).
