2009 ANNUAL MEETING -- BEIJING, CHINA

The 23rd annual meeting of the Society for Conservation Biology will be held from 11-16 July 2009 in Beijing, the host of the 2008 Olympic Games. By meeting in China, SCB will have an outstanding opportunity to learn about one of the world s most biologically complex countries. The meeting will feature more than 25 symposia. Topics will include conservation challenges in Tibet, conservation in China, and conservation science for giant pandas and their habitat. Other symposia will relate China s conservation practices to international issues such as wildlife trade, forest management, migratory species, restoration of the ecological functions of large rivers, and emerging infectious diseases of wildlife. The symposia also will address a variety of policy-relevant topics of global concern, such as monitoring biological diversity, valuation of and payments for ecosystem services, making a business case for conservation, and climate change. Fifteen workshops will provide more-detailed practical advice, such as quantitative assessment of extinction risk, managing human-wildlife conflict, involving the private sector in conservation, reducing disaster risk, and improving the conservation impact of scientific publishing. Further, four short courses will be offered, along with dozens of contributed posters, speed presentations, and networking opportunities. In addition to local excursions, both pre-meeting and post-meeting tours will be offered to many of China s outstanding natural areas, including Tibet. The annual meeting is certain to be a particularly exciting event, and we urge early registration. Visit www.conbio.org/2009 for further information.
