NEOCONS REACHES 1125 READERS IN 54 COUNTRIES, BUT FEW ARE SCB MEMBERS

In April 2004, NeoCons published its 20th issue (Volume 4, Number 2). Six issues of NeoCons per year are distributed electronically and free of cost to SCB members and non-members alike. NeoCons aims to facilitate information exchange among conservation professionals in Austral and Neotropical America (ANA) to help strengthen the discipline of conservation biology in the region.

Although 80% of NeoCons readers come from ten countries located in ANA--United States (26%), Argentina (14%), Brazil (10%), México (9%), Colombia (7%), Perú (4%), Venezuela (3%), Canada (3%), Bolivia (2%), and Chile (2%)--NeoCons is currently distributed in 54 countries. Readership has increased with every consecutive issue, but seems to be stabilizing just below 1200.

A distinctive characteristic of NeoCons is that 94% of its readers are not members of SCB. In fact, most affiliates of the ANA Section do not subscribe to NeoCons. Is this because NeoCons is not known among the ANA membership, or because its content is not appealing to members? Either way, increasing the proportion of ANA members that subscribe to NeoCons, and receiving feedback from them about how to better serve the discipline of conservation biology in the region, are key.

Another way to look at the fact that most subscribers are not SCB members is that it presents an opportunity to take the message of SCB beyond its membership, and to attract potential new members. This is indeed our greatest challenge ahead.

If you or anyone you know may be interested in receiving NeoCons, please visit our Web site and subscribe by filling out the online registration form (www.conservationbiology.org/SCB/Publications/NeoCons/). Entirely composed of text, without figures or graphics, each issue of NeoCons occupies approximately 30 KB. Then, all you need to do is sit back and wait for the next issue to appear in your email box.
