THE CHRISTENSEN FUND SUPPORTS INTERNATIONALIZATION
November 2003 brought exciting news for SCB--The Christensen Fund became our most recent partner by funding a proposal for nearly US$200,000 over two years.
The funding will allow SCB to pursue three significant goals.
1. Capacity. Help build the capacity of SCB and conservation capacity throughout the world via SCB's international sections.
2. Participation. Increase international participation in SCB governance and functions.
3. Representation. Increase representation of non-biological sciences in SCB and in conservation efforts worldwide through the newly-formed Social Science Working Group (see SCB Newsletter Volume 10, Issue 4).
Support from The Christensen Fund will ensure that the international sections and social sciences continue to have a voice in SCB activities and will support efforts to engage practitioners, academics, and stakeholders in all regions of the globe. Perhaps most importantly, these funds likely will catalyze activities--or, as Jon Paul Rodríguez, President of the Austral and Neotropical America section, remarked, "[This grant] sends a solid message about SCB's commitment to internationalization. Now it is the sections' turn to do our part!"
A main goal of The Christensen Fund is to help elucidate the relationships between culture and environment and to strengthen the world's capacity to maintain cultural and biological creativity and diversity. This goal matches well with the goals of SCB. Founded in 1957 by Allen and Carmen Christensen, The Christensen Fund is a private foundation that focuses its support on programs at the interface between natural environments and human cultures. The Christensen Fund primarily supports work with people and communities variously known as indigenous, tribal, and minority, and the landscapes with which those cultures are connected.
Special thanks to Nick Salafsky, Mac Hunter, and John Robinson for their key roles in securing this funding.
The Christensen Fund is but one of many partners we thank for supporting SCB's mission and operations--for a full list, see www.conbio.org/Partners/. For additional information about The Christensen Fund, see www.christensenfund.org.
