SCB's 15th annual meeting was held 29 July--1 August at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. The meeting was co-hosted by the USGS BRD Pacific Island Ecosystems Research Center (PIERC), Hawaii's Secretariat for Conservation Biology, and the University of Hawaii. With the help of our 12 sponsors (for a list see www.uhh.hawaii.edu/~scb) we were able to provide travel awards to 39 North American students and 43 international participants, as well as subsidize meeting costs and the attendance of volunteers and members of the press. We extend our thanks to all the individuals and organizations whose exceptional dedication and hard work contributed to the tremendous success of the 2001 annual meeting.
A total of 1182 delegates from 42 countries attended, 246 of which were students. The scientific program included up to eight concurrent sessions each day, as well as a total of seven symposia, 12 workshops, and six discussions. There were 497 spoken papers (78 symposium talks and 419 contributed papers) and 171 posters. Approximately 250 people took advantage of the 14 field trips offered to witness a wide variety of Hawaii's endemic biota, the threats to their continued existence, and the conservation efforts underway to protect them.
The conference theme was Ecological Lessons from Islands, including such figurative islands as isolated fragments of habitat within altered landscapes. The three-day scientific program began on Monday with a plenary address by Sir Robert May, Conservation in a crowded world: facts, worries, priorities, and politics. This was followed by the featured symposium, Sustaining island ecosystems: can it be achieved in Hawaii? Sponsored by PIERC, the symposium addressed the conference theme within the specific context of the Hawaiian islands.
By all accounts the meeting was a success, and the social events were well attended and widely enjoyed. Approximately 1000 participants joined us at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel for a lovely oceanside Welcoming Reception on Sunday evening, and over 400 people attended the closing luau and awards banquet at the Nani Mau Gardens.
Mahalo nui for joining us in Hilo. It was our pleasure to host this year's meeting, and we hope that it was a rewarding and enriching experience for all.
