2002 ANNUAL MEETING

In 2002, the Society for Conservation Biology will hold its first annual meeting in Europe, in the historic city of Canterbury in the United Kingdom. The meeting will be hosted by the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology (DICE) at the University of Kent at Canterbury (UKC). The Board of Governors hopes that this venue will encourage wider participation and internationalisation in SCB affairs and meetings. The meeting is scheduled from Sunday 14 July to Thursday 18 July 2002 (including arrival and departure dates).

DICE was founded in 1989 and is Britain's only research and postgraduate training centre dedicated to conserving biodiversity and the ecological processes that support ecosystems and people. UKC is a modern campus with full conference and residential facilities set in over 300 acres of parkland overlooking the city of Canterbury. Canterbury is within easy reach of both London and the continent of Europe, making this a very convenient venue not only for arrival and departure, but also for pre-and post-meeting trips.

We propose the broad theme People and Conservation for the meeting. This theme reflects DICE's key interest in conservation and its position within UKC's Department of Anthropology. Our approach is that humanity is both the cause of and the solution to most conservation problems. The British Ecological Society, with its growing interest in conservation ecology, will co-host the meeting. The general aims of the meeting will be to

  • Expose North American and other conservation biologists to the rich variety of conservation work being carried out in Britain specifically and Europe more generally,
  • Similarly, to expose conservation biologists to the major contributions made by British and European conservation biologists to international conservation, and
  • By mirror image, to offer British and European conservation biologists a specific forum to celebrate their own work in these areas, and to learn of work undertaken by SCB members in North America and other regions.

In terms of the local area's ecological and conservation context, human populations occur at high densities in southeast England, and most habitats are greatly modified. Hence, any conservation activity has to be set within the context of human and agricultural landscapes. However, two key Nature Reserves lie within two miles of Canterbury. Blean Wood is an area of ancient woodland, while Stodmarsh (also a RAMSAR site) is an ancient reed bed. Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty within Kent include the chalk grasslands of the North Downs and the White Cliffs of Dover. There are also many areas where the conservation of the historic built environment is tied in very closely with that of the natural environment. Canterbury Cathedral and St Augustine's Abbey are inscribed as World Heritage Sites.

We very much look forward to welcoming you to Kent in 2002. Watch this space for further developments, and for details of the meeting website when it comes on line!
