1998 SCB DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDS

Every year the Society for Conservation Biology presents its Distinguished Service Awards for outstanding contributions to conservation biology. Recipients are nominated by the SCB membership through the Awards Committee and are selected by the SCB Board of Governors. Previous recipients have included many of conservation biology’s most effective leaders and practitioners. These awards, and the Edward T. LaRoe III Memorial Award, will be presented at the 1998 meeting.

Palau Conservation Society
For vigorous efforts to promote public awareness and conservation of the biological diversity of Palau and neighboring island groups in the South Pacific

Sir Otto Frankel
Retired, Commonwealth Science and Industrial
Research Organization (CSIRO), Australia
For fundamental contributions to our understanding of the genetic aspects of conservation biology

Denis Saunders
Division of Wildlife and Ecology, CSIRO
For sustained efforts to communicate and apply the principles of conservation biology in Australia

George Rabb
For extraordinary contributions to biodiversity conservation while chair of the Species Survival Commission of the World Conservation Union

Andy Robinson
For dedicated assistance as an independent advisor to grassroots biodiversity conservation organizations

Kathleen Blanchard and the Quebec-Labrador Foundation
For comprehensive education efforts involving conservation of seabirds and their habitats in the North Atlantic

Special Award of Recognition
the late Graeme Caughley
For broad contributions to the science and practice of conservation biology
