Two levels of tours associated with the conference will be provided: local tours on Friday 17 July, and a series of six longer tours organised by Professor Tony Lee. The local tours, focussing on such issues as fire ecology and conservation in urban environments, will not require advance booking and will depend on local conditions at the time of the conference. The six major tours do require advance booking; contact organiser Tony Lee directly as described below. Prices for all these tours are in Australian dollars.
Tropical Rainforest and Reef Wednesday 8 July to Sunday 12 July (4 days, 5 nights) Location: Cairns, Queensland Minimum registration: 15 Northeastern Queensland is a biologist’s paradise. Offshore is the Great Barrier Reef. The hinterland is a rich mosaic of tropical rainforest and tall open forest giving way to woodlands and savanna. Mangroves clothe the shore. This tour provides an opportunity to explore the biological diversity of the region in the company of experienced naturalists. Birdwatch, spotlight for mammals and reptiles, and snorkel on the outer Barrier Reef. Cost: A$910 per person twin share, single on application. Includes motel- or hotel-style accommodation from evening before tour commences to last night of tour; coach travel; most meals; entry, cruise and national park fees. Warrumbungle and Oxley Wild Rivers Thursday 9 July to Monday 13 July (5 days, 4 nights) Location: Dubbo, New South Wales Minimum registration: 10 The New England region north of Sydney is noted for its rugged landscapes and floral and faunal diversity. This tour samples the western plains, the New England Plateau, and eastern escarpment. You visit the Warrunbungle, New England, and Oxley Wild Rivers National Parks and communities ranging from sub-alpine heaths to sub-tropical rainforest. The diversity of the region presents issues for discussion ranging from management of farmland to management of National Parks and Nature Reserves. Cost: A$1195 per person twin share (single add A$195). Includes accommodation with private facilities, all coach travel, all meals, background notes, seminars, and an experienced program leader. Conservation in Temperate Australia Wednesday 8 July to Sunday 12 July (5 days, 4 nights) Location: Melbourne, Victoria Minimum registration: 10 The region to the west of Melbourne provides examples of many of the conservation issues facing temperate Australia, including management of natural and pastoral vegetation systems, native and feral pest species, and endangered flora and fauna. Visit five national parks and natural systems ranging from coastal heathlands to semi-arid woodlands. Accompanied by one of Australia’s leading naturalists. Cost: A$730 twin share (single add A$98). Includes four nights motel-style accommodation, all meals from lunch on day 1 to lunch on day 5, coach travel, national park and entry fees, and company of an experienced naturalist. Minimum registration: 10 This tour commences on the New England plateau and moves from temperate scrubland to dry and wet rainforest of magnificent wild gorges and escarpments. Then dropping rapidly to sea level, this program offers the diversity of littoral rainforest, coastal dunes and aboriginal history, and culture and landscape management. Diving on the Great Barrier Reef Friday 17 July to Monday 20 July (3 days, 3 nights) Location: Cairns, Queensland Minimum registration: 14 Three days diving on the Great Barrier Reef in the company of a marine biologist aboard a fully equipped dive boat. Special focus on management of the reef. For snorkel divers and certified Scuba divers. An outstanding opportunity to explore one of the world’s most extraordinary natural systems. Cost: A$958 per person. Includes twin share hotel accommodation in Cairns on 17 and 20 July and three days full board aboard the dive boat Tusa. Does not include travel between Cairns and Sydney.
