Meetings and Workshops

A symposium will be held 3-5 June 1997 in St. Louis, Missouri to present pre-treatment findings of a long-term, multi-scale, multi-disciplinary, operational research effort focused in the oak-hickory and oak pine hills in the southeast Missouri Ozarks. Approximately 25 papers will be presented by scientists from throughout the Midwest who are conducting research on the same experimental sites. An optional field trip to the MOFEP sites will be available on the last day of the symposium for those interested. The Conservation & Development Forum (CDF) will convene Forum 97: New Linkages in Conservation and Development 16-21 November 1997 in Istanbul, Turkey. The conference is designed to review experiments in conservation and development over the past decade, highlight the most pressing practical problems in this emerging field, and facilitate creation of new North-South and South-South partnerships for mutual understanding and effective action. Conference themes include Culturally Conflicting Views of Conservation, Engaging Communities in Conservation and Development, Ethics and Responsibility in Environmental Action, Conservation and Development in War and Peace, Business as a Partner in Environmental Action, and Institutional Pathways to Sustainability. Forum 97 will be attended by representatives of

non-governmental organizations, government agencies, donors, universities, grassroots action organizations, and community groups. CDF anticipates the availability of stipends to cover travel and lodging expenses for participants in need of assistance. The Desert Fishes Council will hold its 29th annual meeting 20-23 November 1997 in Death Valley National Park, Californa. Contributed papers and posters on topics relevant to preservation of the biological integrity of desert aquatic ecosystems and their associated life forms are solicted. The deadline for abstracts and preregistration is 1 September. The conference Nature Conservation in Production Environments: Managing the Matrix will be held 30 November - 5 December 1997 in Taupo, New Zealand. Topics will include valuation, measurement, and management of biotic diversity. Contributions are sought from companies, landowners, indigenous and community groups, local authorities, scientists, economists, and other resource managers. Deadline for submission of papers is 31 May 1997. The 1997 Midwest Fish and Wildlife Conference, Managing Natural Resources: Integrating Ecology and Society, will be held 7-10 December 1997 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The goal of the conference is to provide practical information and techniques to professionals who need to apply ecosystem management principles. Symposia, workshops, special sessions, and contributed paper sessions focused on fish and wildlife management and applied ecosystem management are planned. The American Ornithologists' Union, Association of Field Ornithologists, Colonial Waterbird Society, Cooper Ornithological Society, and Wilson Ornithological Society will hold their annual meetings jointly in St. Louis, Missouri from 6-12 April 1998. The Raptor Research Foundation is a co-sponsor and will hold a special raptor symposium at the meeting.
