WELCOME

Colleagues and Friends,

The Society for Conservation Biology's 11th Annual Meeting at the University of Victoria has moved rapidly from discussions and planning to a spate of bookings, abstract sorting, and printing deadlines. The tremendous response to the Call for Papers has been exciting; thanks to all the authors who have submitted their work to the high-quality abstract pool that we are now arranging into a dynamic program.

The conference will bring together a variety of specially focused and contributed paper sessions. Topics range from almost the smallest particles of life in the molecular biology sessions to the largest life forms in the whale sessions, and from the theoretical architecture of the life sciences to the subtleties of gaining conservation perspectives across cultural boundaries. The pivotal argument of conserving nature binds these topics together, creating a powerful and resonant summons.

A central theme for the conference is marine conservation biology. We hope to promote this theme through a dialogue in which conservation scientists from a broad range of backgrounds can proffer their expertise and creativity to support the evolution of this important conservation task. We thank Elliott Norse, who has been a catalyst for bringing this event forward.

The conference site is the campus of the University of Victoria. Be prepared to brave some fresh air between sessions, and to do a little strategic planning to take advantage of a full agenda that will make use of the lecture theatres and seminar rooms around the campus.

Bringing the conference to its current stage has required the support of many individuals. Thanks to those who have responded to our calls for all kinds of support.

We look forward to welcoming you here at the University of Victoria in June to partake in the scientific programs and social events, and to enjoy the community and surroundings.

Sincerely,
