CALL FOR NEW MEMBERS: INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR CONSERVATION GIS

We are pleased to announce the recent formation of the Society for Conservation GIS (SCGIS). On 5-7 July 1997, the Conservation GIS Alliance hosted the first annual Conservation GIS conference, where the decision to form SCGIS was made. Since then, an interim board has incorporated SCGIS in the state of Montana, written a final draft of the bylaws, and is drafting a webpage. SCGIS has been granted a generous endowment from the CEO of ESRI, Jack Dangermond. SCGIS currently is soliciting new members and grant monies. SCGIS is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization; membership dues and donations are tax-deductible. No individual will be turned away for lack of funds. Individuals may elect to sponsor others with little or no budget. For further information, contact Sandra Coveny at sandrac@peak.org.

MISSION AND GOALS OF THE SCGIS

The mission of the SCGIS is to serve, represent, and connect individuals using GIS for conservation work worldwide. The goals of the SCGIS are to

  • Provide training and professional development opportunities to increase the capacity of the conservation community worldwide to use GIS.
  • Promote low cost or free access to data, a critical issue in conservation GIS.
  • Set high ethical and procedural standards for the use of GIS for conservation purposes.
  • Publish a peer-reviewed journal to promote the exchange of ideas and methodologies relevant to conservation GIS.
  • Provide a forum to stimulate global collaborative conservation projects, recognizing that Earth sees no political boundaries.
  • Assist conservationists worldwide in obtaining GIS equipment, software, and services.
  • Host an annual working conference.
  • Provide scholarships and financial support for use of GIS and participation in the conference and training of the SCGIS.
  • Undertake outreach to make GIS available to a wider audience of conservation users, particularly in developing nations.
