A CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS: EDITORIAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM AUSTRAL AND NEOTROPICAL AMERICA SECTION / SE BUSCAN VOLUNTARIOS: PROGRAMA DE ASISTENCIA EDITORIAL DE LA SECCION PARA AMERICA NEOTROPICAL Y AUSTRAL

The Austral and Neotropical America Section (ANA) would like to encourage Latin American conservation biologists to publish in Conservation Biology, the leading journal in the field. A common problem of manuscripts submitted to Conservation Biology by Latin Americans is their written English. While no scientifically sound article is rejected on the basis of its language, appropriate writing can assist in the review and publication process. In this regard, ANA is organizing a free Editorial Assistance Program to assist Spanish, Portuguese and French-speaking authors from Latin American who are not native speakers of English.

Once a manuscript has been submitted to Conservation Biology and initial reviews indicate potential for publication, the Editor will direct manuscripts to this service when it can improve the writing and assist in the revision process. ANA will create a database with SCB members willing to assist authors with their manuscripts, and manuscripts will be assigned according to the area of expertise. This will not be a translation service. Volunteers will only assist in improving clarity and grammar, and try to refine writing into idiomatic English appropriate for publication.

We invite you to join this service. You must have good English and Spanish, Portuguese or French writing skills. If interested in helping out as a volunteer, please contact ANA Communications Director, Miguel Ángel Vásquez at biodiversidad1@ecociencia.org. La Sección para América Neotropical y Austral (ANA) desea exhortar a los biólogos de conservación latinoamericanos a que publiquen sus investigaciones en Conservation Biology, la principal revista de la disciplina en el mundo. Un problema frecuentemente enfrentado por autores latinoamericanos potenciales es su dominio limitado del inglés. A pesar de que ningún artículo con un contenido científico sólido es rechazado sólo por limitaciones de idioma, una correcta redacción facilita el proceso de revisión y edición de manuscritos. En este sentido, ANA está organizando un programa gratuito de asistencia editorial, para ayudar a autores latinoamericanos cuya lengua materna sea castellano, portugués o francés.

Una vez que un manuscrito ha sido enviado a Conservation Biology y su revisión inicial indica potencial para la publicación, el Editor lo enviará al servicio de asistencia editorial, cuando pueda colaborar con mejorar su redacción y facilitar el proceso de revisión. ANA creará una base de datos con miembros de SCB dispuestos a colaborar con los autores en la mejora de sus manuscritos, los cuales serán asignados según sus especialidades respectivas. No se trata de un servicio de traducción. Los voluntarios sólo ayudarán a mejorar la claridad del texto y su gramática, así como refinar el lenguaje para hacerlo más apropiado para su publicación.

Lo invitamos a sumarse a este servicio. Debe dominar el inglés escrito y al menos uno entre castellano, portugués y francés. El Diseño de Estudios de Campo para la Conservación de la Biodiversidad ofrece una orientación entendible y práctica para el uso de la investigación científica en trabajos de conservación. 2. Job announcement / Oferta de empleo: PROGRAM MANAGER INTER-AMERICAN INSTITUTE FOR GLOBAL CHANGE RESEARCH (IAI) (8 September 2004 deadline) (English only / Sólo inglés)

The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) is an intergovernmental organization supported, at present, by 19 countries in the Americas. The IAI's mission is defined as 'to develop the capacity to understand the integrated impact of past, present and future global changes on regional and continental environments in the Americas and to promote collaborative research and informed action at all levels'. In its approach, the institute is dedicated to pursuing the principles of scientific excellence, international cooperation, and the full and open exchange of scientific information relevant to global change.

Currently the IAI is supporting 51 projects involving more than 450 regional scientists. The IAI Directorate is composed of 12 staff (6 international and 6 local) and is located at the headquarters of Brazil's National Institute for Space Research (INPE), in São José dos Campos, São Paulo, Brazil. THE POSITION: Reporting to the IAI Scientific Officer (SO), the Program Manager will be the main liaison between the project investigators and the SO. The successful candidate will be responsible for the day to day management of IAI supported programs and the organization and documentation of IAI program announcements including the peer-review process. The position will also involve some basic financial duties. The appointee will need strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills. Some travels to project sites and meetings of the IAI governing bodies will be required.

QUALIFICATIONS: 1) Advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) in a relevant sub-discipline of the Natural or Social Sciences. 2) At least 4 years of working experience in the management of research programs with at least two years in multidisciplinary and multinational research environments. 3) Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills. 4) Experience in drafting a diverse range of documents - from standard correspondence to drafts of technical reports • Good knowledge of MS Office applications (e.g. Use of Spreadsheets, PowerPoint, e-mail, internet). 5) Experience in data management and use of information systems. 6) Experience in project formulation, monitoring and evaluation desirable. 7) Fluency (both oral and written) in Spanish and English is mandatory for the position, working knowledge of Portuguese desirable.

APPOINTMENT TERMS: The Program Manager will be appointed for a 3 year-term, renewable, including a probation period of six months. An internationally competitive total compensation package, commensurate with experience and professional qualifications will be provided.

4. Funds for endangered birds / Fondos para aves en peligro: RSPB SMALL GRANTS FOR RESEARCH ON ENDANGERED BIRD SPECIES (31 October 2004 deadline) (English only / Sólo inglés)

Each year, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), the BirdLife Partner in the UK, offers grants of up to US$ 1,000 to fund research on bird species listed by IUCN as "Critically Endangered" or "Endangered". Only work on these species will be considered for grants. Priority will be given to people working in-country, particularly BirdLife Partners and other conservation NGOs, although individuals not attached to an institution may also apply if they can obtain a letter of support from a recognised institution in their country.

Applicants need to submit a short project proposal (no more than 2000 words) which includes the following information: 1) The background to the project, 2) The aims of the study, 3) The methods to be used, 4) The organisations involved, 5) The sum sought from RSPB, 6) The expected products of the project.

Successful applicants will be required to submit a report on the results of their project. RSPB retain the right to use this, with permission, to further the conservation of the species in question.

Successful applicants are urged to publish the results of their work wherever possible. RSPB is happy to provide help with this if necessary.

Nos da mucho gusto anunciar la convocatoria del Acta para la Conservación de las Aves Migratorias Neotropicales de 2005.

El Acta establece un programa de subsidios para financiar los proyectos que promocionan la conservación de estas aves en los Estados Unidos, América Latina, y el Caribe. Los proyectos elegibles puedan incluir actividades con beneficios para las poblaciones de estas aves y sus hábitats, la investigación y el monitoreo, la vigilancia normativa, y la educación. Los fondos federales deben recibir aportes paralelos de fondos contrapartes en una relación de por lo menos 3:1. Fondos del gobierno de los Estados Unidos puedan ser parte del proyecto, pero no son elegibles como contraparte.

El Congreso apropió USD$4 millones por el programa de subsidios en el año económico (FY) 2004. La apropiación para FY 2005 todavía no esta determinada.

We are pleased to announce our 2005 Request for Proposals under the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act.

The Act establishes a matching grants program to fund projects that promote the conservation of these birds in the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Projects may include activities to benefit bird populations and their habitats, research and monitoring, law enforcement, and outreach and education. All grant requests must be matched by partner funds at least 3:1. Partner funds from a U.S. federal source may be involved in the project, but are not eligible as match.

Congress appropriated $4 million for the grants program in Fiscal Year 2004. The FY 2005 appropriation has not yet been determined.

The IAS-STS in Graz, Austria, promotes the interdisciplinary investigation of the links and interactions between science, technology and society as well as research on the development and implementation of socially and environmentally sound technologies. For this the IAS-STS invites researchers to apply for a stay between 1 October 2005 and 30 June 2006 as

Fellows (up to nine months) or as Visiting Scholars (up to one month)

We also encourage senior scientists - working within the framework of the issues listed below - to apply as Guest Lecturers.

The IAS-STS offers excellent research infrastructure. Close co- operation with researchers at the IFZ (Inter-University Research Centre for Technology, Work and Culture; see: www.ifz.tugraz.at), guest lectures, workshops and conferences provide an atmosphere of creativity and scholarly discussion.

Furthermore we can offer five grants (EUR 1,000 per month) for long term Fellows (nine months) at the IAS-STS in Graz starting 1 October 2005, ending 30 June 2006.

The fellowship programme 2005-2006 is dedicated to projects investigating the following issues:

1. Gender - Technology - Environment. Women with their various interests, competencies and potentials play an important part in the process of shaping socially sound and environmentally friendly sustainable technologies - be it as users and consumers, or as experts. Applications should focus on research in the field of women in traditionally male fields of engineering, on ways of creating cultures of success for women engineers (students, graduates), and on masculinity and the culture of engineering.

2. Ethical, Legal and Social Aspects of Human Genetics and Biotechnology A main focus of the fellowship programme lies on research projects providing a better understanding of human genetics or biotechnology in the context of fabrication, application and regulation. Researchers investigating socio-cultural aspects of genetic testing or risk issues in biotechnology are especially encouraged to apply.

3. Technology Studies and Sustainability. Fellowships will be awarded for research projects contributing to the issue of sustainable development from the perspective of social studies or the history of science and technology. Projects should aim at socio- economic aspects of environmental technologies or at strategies of environmental technology policy, such as user participation, strategic niche management or ecological product policy. We encourage both theoretical analysis and practically oriented case studies.

Applications must be submitted to the IAS-STS together with a research proposal by 15 January 2005.
