The SCB Chapters Committee is an incredibly fun and rewarding group.  We do things like put on big social events at the SCB conference (e.g., the SCB Networking Night), host chapter workshops, provide new ways for Chapters to communicate and interact, and help new chapters grow.  There’s nothing quite like seeing the immediate effects of your work and knowing that you’re making a real difference for conservation and for SCB!

We began in 2003 at the request of the SCB Executive Office and functioned as an extension of that office for several years.  In 2009, in recognition of the important role of the Committee, it was officially incorporated into SCB's bylaws and brought under the purview of the SCB Board of Governors. In 2010, the newly-renamed Chapters Committee (the word "Advisory" was dropped from the title) expanded to 14 members, each of whom is focused on  specific programmatic or operational functions of the Chapters. The Committee members are each capable, committed and energetic supporters of Chapters, and all have previous experience as a leader of one or more Chapters. SCB couldn't ask for a better group of people to lead the Chapters into a new era of local activity, subgroup partnerships and global contributions!

The Committee’s formal mission is to guide and support Chapters as well as to advocate Chapter interests with SCB-global. The Committee members fulfill this mission by:

- Helping Chapters establish and grow
- Increasing material support from SCB-global
- Enabling inter-chapter communication
- Promoting collaboration among Chapters & other parts of SCB
- Creating greater visibility for Chapters within SCB-global
- Facilitating a network of Chapters across the globe

Chapters 5-Year Strategic Plan

The 2006-2010 5-year Strategic Plan for Chapters and the Chapters Committee was drafted in 2006 after the San Jose conference.  This plan provides a road map for fostering chapter growth, visibility, and networking.  96% of the plan had been achieved by the third quarter of 2010. The next plan, 2011-2015, will be written upon completion of the SCB's main Strategic Plan.
