Kristen Blann holds a Ph.D. in Conservation Biology (2004) from the University of Minnesota Department of Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology where she studied landscape-scale influences on coldwater stream fish communities in the Driftless area of the Upper Mississippi River, working with Dr. Bruce Vondracek.  She joined The Nature Conservancy science staff as a Freshwater Ecologist in January 2006, where she has provided technical leadership for aquatic Conservation Action Plans for TNC's priority watersheds, lakes and streams in Iowa and Minnesota, and is currently working on plans for TNC's aquatic landscapes in the Kettle, Snake, and Upper St. Croix rivers of Minnesota and Wisconsin.  In 2008, she completed a statewide conservation portfolio for TNC, including a report co-authored with Meredith Cornett "Identifying Lake Conservation Priorities for The Nature Conservancy in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota: Volume I". Prior to her work at The Nature Conservancy, Dr. Blann held a postdoctoral position with the University of Minnesota Water Resources Center exploring the impact of agricultural tile drainage on aquatic ecosystems.  In her spare time, she gardens and raises sheep on 8 acres in central  Minnesota north of Little Falls, and plays music with friends.

Her Ph.D. research focuses on predicting the distribution of naturally fishless lakes across the landscape with GIS and paleolimnological techniques, and assessing the effects of introduced fish on native fishless lake  macroinvertebrate communities. Emily is broadly interested in understanding physical and biological processes that influence the distribution of freshwater species across the landscape, and how freshwater communities are altered by the introduction of non-native predators. Having  recently moved to the Twin Cities, Emily hopes to learn more about current conservation issues in Minnesota through her involvement with MN SCB.
