Field Trips and Excursions
Come early and stay late in New York City this summer. We have lots for you to do!
We have developed a variety of field trips and excursions to offer the attendees of the SCB Annual Meeting. The trips highlight the biodiversity in the region, education and research efforts of the CERC consortium members, and allow you to enjoy the natural areas that are surprisingly near by, whether hiking Hunter Mountain, looking for Bald Eagles in Northern Manhattan or walking the shore of Fire Island. A calendar of trips is below. Excursions are separately listed. *NEW
The trips have been scheduled for before, during and after the conference to allow all attendees the chance to join in on a trip. Those scheduled during the conference are designed for family members (particularly children) accompanying conference attendees. Trips that do not meet minimum enrollment will be cancelled. Field trips that have been filled to capacity will not appear in the online registration system. To be placed on the waitlist, please email 2004@conbio.org
SCB and the CERC thank all the individuals and organizations who have generously helped develop these trips and in some cases underwritten much of the costs: New York City Department of Environmental Protection, The Nature Conservancy (Eastern New York and Long Island chapters), Hackensack Riverkeeper, American Museum of Natural History, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, The New York Botanical Garden, Wildlife Conservation Society, and The National Park Service.
All prices in US dollars.

This cruise will provide participants with a chance to observe a colony of over 200 black-crowned night herons on North Brother Island, and a mixed colony of night herons, great and snowy egrets, and glossy ibis on South Brother Island. We may see other waders, shorebirds, and local NY inhabitants as we head out to the colony and cruise from the north end of Manhattan to the southern tip of the island. Leaders will share perspectives on heron management in an urban area, how local heron populations have fared in the NY Harbor over the past 20 years, local research and education programs that are ensuring survival of these species in a heavily human dominated landscape, as well as stories about the cultural history of NYC’s islands.
