The Center for Environmental Research and Conservation
(CERC) at the Earth Institute at Columbia University is very pleased
to host the 2004 Society for Conservation Biology Annual Meeting,
bringing together conservation biology scientists, practitioners
and students from around the world. CERC is a consortium of Columbia
University, the American Museum of Natural History, The New York
Botanical Garden, Wildlife Conservation Society, and Wildlife Trust.
This year’s meeting theme is "Conservation
in an Urbanizing World." For the first time in history,
more of the world's population lives in urban rather than non-urban
settings. The urbanization process poses significant conservation
challenges, changing patterns of consumption, trade and ecosystem
use. Ecosystem health near urban areas is integral to human welfare,
and urban conservation issues involve marine, freshwater and terrestrial
ecosystems all over the world.
The SCB 2004 Annual Meeting will consider the
theme of "Conservation in an Urbanizing World" and other
emerging topics through plenary sessions, symposia, workshops, organized
discussions, contributed oral presentations, and poster sessions.
Field trips to key restoration and conservation sites in and near
New York City have been organized to highlight the possibilities
that exist. Please see each menu item to the left for information
and we look forward to seeing you in New York.
