Transport

International travellers may arrive at, and depart from, one of London's three airports, and seven possible terminals. Furthermore, the enhanced airport security since September 11th does not allow buses to wait outside airport terminals We cannot run shuttle services from outside London airport terminals, so you will need to make your own way to Canterbury by train, coach or taxi. Canterbury is served by two railway stations, Canterbury East and Canterbury West with regular trains that originate in London Victoria, as well as a National Express coach service that originates from Victoria Coach Station. An efficient taxi service is also based in Canterbury.

Rail from Gatwick:

The Gatwick Express runs into London Victoria every 15 minutes. There are regular trains from Victoria to Canterbury East, although less frequent on Saturdays and Sundays than on weekdays. This route is the most expensive of the three routes from Gatwick.

Trains also run from Gatwick to London Bridge less regularly than the Gatwick Express, and there are regular trains from London Bridge to Canterbury West.

Trains also run cross-country with two or three changes to Canterbury West. This is usually equally quick and is cheapest because it avoids going into London.

Rail from Heathrow:

The underground leaves very regularly from Heathrow via Paddington to Victoria, and there are regular trains from Victoria to Canterbury East.

You can check the National Railway website to look at these options:

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/enquiries/enq.htm

This website will warn of any engineering works on railway lines on a Saturday, or more likely on a Sunday that make these advertised journeys longer.

Coach from Heathrow or Gatwick:

National Express run an hourly coach service from London Victoria Coach Station to Canterbury Bus Station. From London Heathrow, National Express run a regular service to London Victoria Coach Station. If coming into Gatwick, take the Gatwick Express train to Victoria and walk down to the Coach Station. Coach seats to Canterbury are best booked in advance. You can check the National Express website to look at options and to book:

Taxi

You can be collected on arrival from Gatwick or Heathrow by a Canterbury taxi driver. They are much cheaper than taking an airport taxi. To book a taxi, contact Alan Jones and Mike Terry by email on <aairways@hotmail.com> (Note the 'aa' is not a typo), by fax on +44-1227 360374, or by telephone on +44-1227 742187 with flight number and arrival time. The taxi company will, if contacted in advance, arrange to collect a group of people arriving at similar times, so that costs can be shared. The cost from Gatwick to Canterbury is £50, and from Heathrow to Canterbury is £65. If shared by 3 or 4 people, the cost equates to a train fare, yet has the convenience of being a a door-to-door journey. The taxi drivers will have DICE logos for easy identification. If you have a problem upon arrival ring Alan and Mike on 01227 742187.
