Background

The University of Kent at Canterbury is a modern campus set in over 300 acres of parkland overlooking the historic city of Canterbury. UKC Hospitality has hosted many international events and conferences that attract large numbers of delegates. The facilities meet, and indeed exceed, the requirements for a SCB Annual Meeting, in terms of plenary and lecture halls, and of on-campus accommodation and catering.

Accommodation

The University is built around four Colleges, named after famous figures: Darwin, Keynes, Eliot and Rutherford. College accommodation comprises either en-suite single rooms, standard single rooms or en-suite twin rooms, that in total can hold a maximum of 1400 delegates. Further campus accommodation is available in 5-6 person self-catering houses located in Parkwood Village.

In addition, for those who may not wish to stay on campus, various off-campus hotels and hostels covering a wide spectrum of luxury and price, are available in and around Canterbury.

Meals

The University is a 15 minute walk from the nearest off-campus pub or restaurant. Hence, it is planned that most catering will be provided on campus. English Breakfast will be included as part of the accommodation rates and will be taken in the College where delegates are resident. Lunch will be provided for all delegates. However, dinner will be left optional as delegates can then choose to take their meals on a cash basis from any of the various outlets on or off campus. All delegates will be invited to a welcome reception. The conference dinner will be optional.

Tea and coffee breaks

Tea and coffee will be served during morning and afternoon breaks for all delegates. It is the policy of UKC Hospitality to provide china at such breaks.

Transportation

Canterbury is very accessible (maps and travel directions). The three airports in London are served by all major airlines flying from North America, and Canterbury is within easy reach of all three. Taxis are always available for a direct journey to Canterbury: Gatwick (1 hour 15 minutes away), Heathrow (1 hour 45 minutes) and Stansted (1 hour 15 minutes). Alternatively, all airports have rail and coach links into central London, from whence trains or coaches can be caught to Canterbury (total journey time with connections around 3 hours).

Delegates from Europe will also find Canterbury very convenient, by air (see above) or by land or sea. It is 45 minutes from the Channel Tunnel (Eurostar and LeShuttle) and 30 minutes from the ports of Dover and Folkestone.
