Canterbury is a City that is historically well used to pilgrims and is well visited
by modern day tourists. Delegates wishing for a break from the meeting and guests
accompanying delegates will find plenty to do in the City and surrounding countryside.
Much tourist literature is available on campus, both in college receptions and in
the Grimond Foyer. Your first port of call should be the Canterbury Tourist Information Centre at 12-13 Sun Street, telephone (01227) 766567 They have even more literature and very helpful staff who can help plan an individual package of activities. Guided walks around the City also leave from outside the Information Centre daily at 1130 and 1400, and no booking is required. If delegates and their guests without their own transport wish to undertake activities in a group, the following are suggested for trips. We stress these are only suggestions and have not been formally organised by the Local Committee. Those wishing to follow these suggestions should make their own individual or collective arrangements. The message board can be used to express and learn of collective interest in particular trips. Eating Out Canterbury has a wide range of restaurants that cater for most tastes. The Canterbury website provides details of the many options. http://www.canterbury.co.uk/cgi-bin/eatingout.cgi?location=Canterbury A feature of both the City of Canterbury and the County of Kent are its pubs and beer. Hops were brought here in Roman times as a salad vegetable, and flourished in the climate that came to be known as the Garden of England. Shepherd Neame is Britain's oldest brewer, and has been brewing on the same site in nearby Faversham, Kent since 1698. This family business produces cask and bottled ales, including Bishop's Finger and Spitfire, which was awarded the coveted Gold Medal at the prestigious International Brewing Industry Awards. Many character pubs in the City and the surrounding villages serve Shepherd Neame beers, as well as other locally brewed ales. DICE students favour the Bishop's Finger and the Unicorn near the Westgate, and Simple Simons in St Radigunds Street. The Red Lion in Stodmarsh is a walk or cycle away. All overseas delegates should experience the atmosphere of a traditional Kent pub, and help preserve their character. Many, unfortunately, are falling prey to the multi-national chains and offer drinks that scarcely deserve being classified, taxonomically, as beer. http://www.shepherd-neame.co.uk/ |
