Collaborating for Conservation: The Great Ape Survival Project
Richard Leakey has been at the forefront of conservation in Africa for many years,
and has recently accepted the role of Special Advisor to the UNEP Great Ape Survival
Project (GRASP). He will outline the activities of this international partnership,
and explain how such a wide-ranging initiative can and must maintain its focus on
real issues and positive action. The drastic situation faced by many great ape populations
is well known, and the potential for UNEP to play a key role in addressing this will
be explored. Within the theme of international collaboration, Richard Leakey will
also introduce the Africa Section of the Society for Conservation Biology and speak
briefly about how this will change the shape of conservation activity across the
continent.
