Canterbury Cathedral is the centre of the Anglican Church and lies at the heart
of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The World Heritage Site includes the Cathedral,
the ruins of the nearby St Augustine's Abbey, and St Martin’s Church in North Holmes
Road where St Augustine first began his mission to bring Christianity to the British
Isles in 597. The history and presence of the Cathedral dominates the City of Canterbury,
which is forever linked with the murder in the Cathedral of Thomas Becket in 1170
and with Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.
Delegates to this meeting of the Society of Conservation Biology are most fortunate
to be able to experience this beautiful building, and to hear a specially arranged
concert of religious and secular music sung by the Canterbury Cathedral Choir and
played by the Jubilate Brass.
Delegates who wish to arrive early and enjoy a specially guided tour with a Cathedral
Guide around this magnificent building can do so at the concessionary price of £3
per person. Delegates who wish to take this opportunity are asked to sign up at
the Registration Desk before 1800 hrs on Monday so that
the numbers of Guides can be determined in advance.
Timetable
The walk from the University Campus to the Cathedral takes around 20 minutes.
The Cathedral Precinct can be entered on foot from the Christ Church Gate, off the
Buttermarket, or the Quenin Gate, which lies close to a car park. Entrance to the
Cathedral will be by meeting badge only.
| 18.30 |
The South West Doors of the Cathedral Doors will open to delegates who have pre-booked
to take a guide tour. |
|
Seats for the Concert are unreserved and can be filled on a
first-come, first served basis. All delegates should be in their seats by
1925. |
| 19.30 |
Concert begins. |
| 21.00 |
The Concert ends, and all delegates are kindly asked to leave the Cathedral as quickly
as convenient. Both the Christ Church and Quenin Gates will be open. |
Acknowledgements
We are most grateful to the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury Cathedral, Susan Wanless,
Director of Music at the University of Kent, and David Flood, Organist and Master
of the Choristers, for their help and enthusiasm in organising both access to the
Cathedral and this special concert for delegates.
